Introduction to Bankruptcy: Basic Concepts for the CPA addresses
essential bankruptcy basics with which every CPA should have some
familiarity. Topics covered include: recognizing red flags that may
indicate your client needs to reorganize; the impact of a bankruptcy
filing on the accountant – client relationship, including the effects of
the automatic stay, preferences, and filing claims; and post-bankruptcy
employment of accountants, court authorized engagements and getting paid
for your services.

SUSAN JAFFE ROBERTS
Susan Jaffe Roberts is a partner in Whiteford, Taylor & Preston,
L.L.P.’s Business Reorganization and Bankruptcy Litigation group and
resident in the firm’s Baltimore, Maryland office. Ms. Roberts was
admitted to the Maryland bar in 2001, the U.S. District Court for the
District of Maryland and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth
Circuit in 2002 and was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of
the United States in 2006. She has been a lecturer for various
associations including the Maryland Bankruptcy Bar Association, where on
November 17, 2010, she discussed the topic of Bondholders, Indenture
Trustees, and Chapter 11 Plan and Claim Rights. Ms. Roberts is a member
of the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Maryland Bankruptcy Bar
Association, the International Women’s Insolvency and Restructuring
Confederation, the Maryland State Bar Association, and the American Bar
Association. In 2010, she was recognized as a Rising Star among Maryland
Super Lawyers. Ms. Roberts focuses her practice on Bankruptcy,
Bankruptcy Litigation, Trustee Representation, Creditors Committee
Representation, Chapter 11 Reorganization and Creditors’ Rights; Special
Counsel Services; Distressed Business Workouts; and Business Litigation,
including Malpractice Litigation.
BRENT C. STRICKLAND
Brent C. Strickland is a partner in the firm’s Business Reorganization
and Bankruptcy Litigation group and resident in the firm’s Bethesda,
Maryland office. Mr. Strickland was admitted to the Maryland bar in
1993, the New York bar in 1994, the Virginia bar in 1995, and the
District of Columbia bar in 1996. He is a member of the U.S. District
Courts for the Districts of Maryland, District of Columbia, Eastern
District of Virginia, and Southern District of New York. Mr. Strickland
is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, Maryland Bankruptcy
Bar Association, American Bar Association, New York State Bar
Association, Virginia State Bar Association, American Bankruptcy
Institute, District of Columbia Bar Association. Since 2007, he has been
named one of Maryland’s Super Lawyers. Mr. Strickland focuses his
practice on Bankruptcy; Bankruptcy Litigation; Bankruptcy Trustee
