We’re seeing some pretty significant legislative changes in Annapolis this year. Maryland has a new governor, a new comptroller, plenty of new leadership on key legislative committees — we’ve even got our first members of Generation Z to join the General Assembly this year.

All of that means it’s more important than ever for CPAs to get involved in the legislative process. New folks in these positions of legislative power need guidance on the issues and how those issues impact taxpayers and businesses. Without it, we run the risk of seeing the unintended consequences of well-intentioned legislation. That can be dangerous stuff, and our elected officials often want and need educated professionals like CPAs to walk them through the issues and the process. That type of guidance can make all the difference.

This is why CPAs must pay attention to what’s happening on the local scene legislatively. Any legislation of importance is likely happening on the state or local scene. If we’re not paying attention there, things will happen that we might not like. So this is your wakeup call to pay attention, to get involved, and to start now.

It’s why I am very happy to welcome my guest this week. She is Brooke Lierman, the first woman to be elected as Maryland’s comptroller. And the comptroller is the state’s CFO — the state’s CPA, in a way. In Maryland, that’s Brooke Lierman.

Our new comptroller and I talked about her vision for Maryland, her relationship with new Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and our legislative leadership, and maybe most important, the role CPAs can play in the financial future of the state.

Listen to our conversation in its entirety.
