For the longest time, Maryland seemed to be the gold standard among states for flattening the COVID-19 curve. The numbers of cases and hospitalizations were down and stayed down, which allowed the state to reopen much of its economy by late summer.

That, as they say, was then.

The number of COVID-19 cases is surging throughout the country. The New York Times has been tracking the number of new cases in each state daily throughout the pandemic, and its most recent list of “States Where New Cases Are Higher And Staying Higher” now stands at 50. That’s essentially the entire nation.

Maryland is among them. New cases and hospitalizations are up across the board, prompting Gov. Larry Hogan on Nov. 11 to enact new restrictions on restaurants, travel, and indoor gatherings. Six days later, he expanded those restrictions even further.
