Think your ethics are pretty solid? Let’s compare them to the Chicago Defender.
A 102-year-old newspaper with a staff of about 30, the Defender recently uncovered proof of payroll fraud in its accounting department. So what did the papers’ leaders do?
They fired the entire department.
According to this Editor & Publisher article, the four-person accounting deparment was terminated en masse after it was discovered that “paychecks were being issued and cashed in the name of employees who were no longer working” at the paper. Police were even called into the paper’s officers, supposedly to investigate the fraud.
Talk about your zero-tolerance policies. How far are you willing to go to fight fraud in your organization?
