They want to give back to the community and make their profession stronger and better.
That is the overarching message that MACPA NYPN leader Diana Scatliffe said last night after a very successful event in Maryland's capital area at Strike Bethesda. Check out her interview later in this post.
I got to be there with almost 50 young CPAs and CPA candidates from our New / Young Professionals Network (NYPN) who were bowling the night away and raised more than $1,000 to benefit the Maryland Food Bank. (Pictured is the winning team from Reznick's tax group, plus Diana Scatliffe awarding them their prizes.)
Between the fun, I got to talk to them about what it is like being a young professional today, what the “new” CPA exam is all about (hint: BEC is the easy part and FAR is the toughest) and what do they want from their profession. The answers are consistent with our prior research (see post below):
- Flexibility and work/life balance are important, but so is their careers. They want support when taking time for family and personal situations.
- Leadership: They appreciate opportunities to gain leadership and management skills and want more. (Did you know that involving them in the MACPA is one of the easiest ways to get leadership skills?)
- Giving back to the community.
- Being involved in their profession and making it stonger.
Sounds a lot like our brand promise: Connect. Protect. Achieve.
I came away form the evening energized and very hopeful about our profession's future. Thanks, NYPN!
The next event is Oct. 19 at the AMF Timonium Bowling Lanes as the Baltimore section of NYPN goes to the alley to see if they can top the capital area. Click here for more information and download this form to register your team.
