“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ ”

As we pay tribute today to one of history’s great activists, philosophers, and humanitarians, this quote from Martin Luther King Jr., more than any other, strikes home for me.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of John W. Cromwell Jr. becoming our nation’s first Black CPA. February marks the annual observance of Black History Month. Today we honor the birthday and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

All seem like perfect opportunities for us to ask: What are we doing for others?

What are we doing to build a more diverse, inclusive, and equal profession?

What are we doing to promote and protect the civil rights of all Americans?

What are we doing to make this a more equal, inclusive, and peaceful world?

And if the answer is, “Nothing yet,” how can we start?

MLK also said, “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”

Let’s start there.
