UPDATE: The IRS is extending the filing and payment deadline until midnight on Wednesday, April 18.

Did you have issues filing your last-minute tax return? You weren’t the only one.

The IRS had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day on Tuesday. Its online e-File and Direct Pay systems crashed on Tax Day.

“Taxpayers looking to pay their taxes or estimated taxes from their bank accounts using the IRS’s Direct Pay function were greeted with this message: ‘Alert: This service is currently unavailable. We apologize for any inconvenience,'” Accounting Today’s Daniel Hood reported. “A similar message greeted users looking to apply for a payment plan or view account information. Published reports said that parts of the Modernized e-File System were also down, and that filings from services like H&R Block and TurboTax were not getting through.”

For his part, acting IRS Commissioner David Kautter said taxpayers would not be penalized as a result of the online glitches.

Later Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin agreed, saying that taxpayers who experienced difficulties filing their returns because of the technical glitches would be granted an extension.

“Well make sure taxpayers have extensions once the system comes up to make sure they can use it, and it in no way impacts people paying their taxes,” Mnuchin told The Associated Press. “It was just a technical issue were working through.”

As of late Tuesday afternoon, the IRS’s systems appeared to be working normally.
