Let's dry ourselves off a bit and assess the tax filing situation for a couple of minutes.
You're probably aware by now that the IRS has extended the Sept. 15 federal filing deadline for taxpayers whose preparers were impacted by Hurricane Irene. That deadline has been pushed back a week to Sept. 22.
Now, Maryland and some of her neighbors in the Mid-Atlantic have followed suit.
The Sept. 15 state filing deadline has been also been extended to Sept. 22 for eligible taxpayers in Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C.
Additional tax relief has been made available to certain taxpayers Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Puerto Rico and Vermont. That relief moves “certain tax filing and payment deadlines to Oct. 31, 2011,” reports the IRS. “It includes corporations and businesses that previously obtained an extension until Sept. 15, 2011, to file their 2010 returns and individuals and businesses that received a similar extension until Oct. 17. It also includes the estimated tax payment for the third quarter of 2011, which would normally be due Sept. 15.
