Happy birthday, America! While you’re waiting for the fireworks to start, grab another hot dog and chew on these Fourth of July stats, courtesy of the Census Bureau:
- 2.5 million: The nation’s estimated population in July 1776.
- 304 million: Our population today.
- More than 1 in 4: Odds that the hot dogs and pork sausages you’re eating today originated in Iowa.
- 1 billion: Pounds of watermelon grown in Georgia, more than in any other state.
- 31: Number of places in the United States with “liberty” in their name. The most populous is Liberty, Mo. (29,581).
- $349.2 million: Yearly value of flags, banners and other patriotic emblems produced by American manufacturers.
- $4.7 million: Value of 2007 U.S. imports of American flags. Nearly $4.3 million of this amount was for U.S. flags made in China.
- More than 74 million: Number of Americans who said they have taken part in a barbecue during the previous year. According to the National Retail Federation 61.2 percent of consumers will attend a cookout or do a little grilling of their own on the Fourth. Meanwhile 40.2 percent will attend a fireworks celebration, 10.5 percent will go to a parade and 11.2 percent will travel or take a vacation.
However you’re spending the holiday, here’s hoping it’s full of fun.
