As a resident of St. Louis, I’m troubled by the events of the past few days. I find myself saddened, and angry, and frightened, and proud, and embarrassed, and hopeful … all at the same time. I know I’m not alone.
I’m also thankful. So, so thankful.
I’m thankful for all of the usual things – love of family and friends, security of a job I adore, good health, access to food and shelter and affordable health care, freedom. I take these things for granted far too often.
So do you. Give thanks for them today.
Give thanks as well for the police officers who put their lives on the line to protect us each and every day – and for the watchdogs who make sure the law enforcers don’t abuse their power.
Give thanks for the diversity that makes this country great. For the knowledge that the actions of a few don’t define the whole. For the realization that we’ll solve our problems not through violence, but through peaceful, constructive conversation and meaningful reform.
Give thanks for our way of life. It’s not perfect. Far from it. But it’s the best this world has to offer, and I’m thankful for that.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
